5.0 out of 5 stars My 3 year old adores this lantern, June 18, 2010

My son had developed a fear of the dark so I thought to get him a flashlight, but typical flashlights seemed too difficult to turn on and children's flashlights were too flimsy. This one was just right! It's both a spot light (what my son calls a giant flash light) for seeking Mommy out in the middle of the night and a lantern for when he wakes up and just needs a bit of light to feel secure. And of course he seeks out every dark room with it during the day to explore!

It is definitely durable. He's thrown it and dropped it plenty of times with no problems. My only concern is that there's no automatic off: when it's on, it's on (er, although sometimes it randomly shuts off). And it is BRIGHT. There are two brightness settings but there's barely a difference. It's either 1 LED, 3 LEDs, or off.

I recommend getting this lantern for fun or just to make your child feel more comfortable with the darkness!

Like many of you reading this, my 3 year old and 5 year old children, LOVE playing with flashlights. However, they have broken many bulbs and switches in our normal flashlights due to hard use. So I was excited to find this "Kid-Tough" flashlight. I ordered two of them, one for each child.

I am sad to say after 24 hours, we will be returning both flashlights. Both lights shut off by themselves in the time range of 2 minutes 50 seconds to the 3 minute mark each time.

My 5 year old discovered this and was very frustrated by this. He kept having to turn it back on and he didn't like to have it go out so fast when he was playing in the dark. My 3 year old has not noticed, because she turns it on and off so often that this doesn't happen to her.

This flashlight is not supposed to have an auto shut-off. If it did, I would think that 15 minutes would be a more suitable time period, not 3 minutes.

We replaced the supplied batteries with... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars If your lantern turns off automatically, then this will fix it, May 27, 2011

When I received the lantern, it turned off automatically after 10-15 seconds.
I noticed in reviews regarding this lantern, that others have experienced too short intervals before it turning off.

What does this is actually a stuck spring/lever on a sort of circuit breaker/timer.
The lantern is supposed to turn off automatically after roughly 3 minutes.
However, while in the box, this interval is lowered to 10-15 seconds so the batteries aren't drained by children trying the toy in the shop.

When you take the lantern out of the box, you have to release it from the cardboard bottom by twisting a weird plastic screw. This plastic screw reaches into the bottom of the lantern, and keeps the spring on the circuit breaker/timer depressed while in the store. When unfastening the plastic screw, the spring is supposed to flip away from the switch it was previously activating, thus raising the shut-down time to 3 minutes.

The big problem some of us... Read more
