The V-Line Compact safe is a durable, quality security box made in the USA. The steel construction and high grade security lock combine to give you solid performance when you need it. The lock has 1081 possible combinations and is easy to set, and easy to use. Battery free design means you'll never be left out because of power failure. The rear full length piano style hinge is welded at one end to prevent removal. There is an elongated hole to allow a security cable to attach the case to a desk, auto seat, or other stationary point to prevent removal. I wish I could have seen it in person first. The image used by Amazon obscures the inner lock mechanism that takes up a substantial amount (5 1/4" x 1 5/16") of the space in a key part of the inside when the lid is closed. The locking mechanism effectively removes 5 3/4" by 2 3/4" of the 9" 6 1/5" of storage. I can fit a Glock 19 in the safe - in one orientation only (the one showed in the image) - but not even an extra magazine. BTW - I don't think the lid could be closed on the gun in the image (the lock mechanism would conflict with the trigger guard on the pistol).The below "graphic" should give you an idea of where the lock mechanism is when the lid is closed. "dots" are usable space (sorry the right-hand side doesn't match up...) It works nicely at first, but after time you realize that the batteries die and it is hard to predict when that will happen. Some of the electronic safes have warning systems to warn you the batteries are low, but they don't always work and are easy to ignore. Also, with my electronic safe if the batteries sit there for a year or two at a time, they can corrode and/or leak. The batteries in my electronic safe started to corrode and I had to remove them and totally clean the battery area to fix it. Bottom line: in an emergency, when you need your gun most, you cannot rely on an electronic lock to open for you. The V-Line mechanical gun locker is the best solution I have found for keeping your guns safely out of reach of children or houseguests, but still giving you quick and reliable access to your gun. It does not need batteries or a key. The mechanism is dependable and the code can be changed as needed. I have an electronic safe with batteries that sometimes will not open. This safe is more expensive, but with fewer components, there is less to go wrong. You do have to turn the knob after putting in the combination, but you know it will open every time. I have used this safe in my vehicle and home and have never had an issue. I have three children and want to protect them. This safe keeps my weapon close at hand, but does not allow unwanted access. |
